Stephen Mangan returns for Landscape Artist of the Year, travelling across the country to find the nation’s best landscape artist. From 2,000 applicants, just 48 artists are selected for six heats, capturing spectacular views ranging from lakes and mountains to feats of engineering and royal palaces.

The competition visits Derwentwater in the Lake District, Dover Castle and its bustling ferry port, St James’s Park and the River Thames from HMS Wellington. Judges Kathleen Soriano, Tai Shan Schierenberg and newcomer Eva Langret assess their work.

At each location, up to 50 wildcard artists also compete for a single place in the semi-final at Sussex’s Ouse Valley Viaduct. The final is held at the Falkirk Wheel, where three artists vie for the grand prize: a £10,000 National Gallery of Ireland commission to create a landscape of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, Ireland’s holy mountain and iconic pilgrimage site.
