Blending investigative journalism with cinematic storytelling, The Murder of Mr. Moonlight explores the extraordinary true story of Tipperary DJ Bobby Ryan’s murder and the decade-long pursuit of justice. This five-part factual drama, written by Malcolm Campbell and based on Catherine Fegan’s book, begins with Bobby’s disappearance in June 2011 after leaving his girlfriend Mary Lowry’s farm.
When his body was discovered nearly two years later in a run-off tank on the property, suspicion turned to Pat Quirke – Mary’s brother-in-law, financial adviser, farm manager and former lover. Unable to accept that Mary had moved on with Bobby, Pat went to extraordinary lengths to conceal the crime and direct suspicion elsewhere.
The case became a gripping tale of love, greed and jealousy that shocked rural Ireland. Pat Quirke’s trial became the longest murder trial in Irish criminal history, revealing the hidden complexities of a deeply tangled love triangle.
